Thompson Vitamin B12 lozenges contain 1000mcg of Vitamin B12 plus folic acid with fresh, healthy ingredients. Thompson’s own laboratory testing ensures the purity and freshness of all Thompson products. Vitamin B12 is a water-soluble vitamin needed for normal nerve cell activity, DNA replication, and the production of the same mood-affecting substance (s-adenosyl-l-methionine).
Vitamin B12 works with the folate sample and vitamin B6 to control homocysteine levels. Too much homocysteine is associated with an accumulated risk of heart disease, stroke, and potentially other illnesses such as osteoporosis and Alzheimer’s disease.
How to use:
Most people don’t need vitamin B12 supplements. However, vegans should supplement with at least 2 to 3 mcg per day. People with pernicious anemia are often treated with vitamin B12 injections. However, oral administration of 1000 mcg per day can be reliably used as an alternative to vitamin B12 injections.
The absorption of vitamin B12 decreases with age. Some research suggests that older people can benefit from 10 to 25 mcg per day of vitamin B12. A study of older people with vitamin B12 deficiency suggested that up to 500-1000 mcg of vitamin B12 per day may be needed to achieve optimal vitamin B12 status.
Vitamin B12 status was measured in this study using a sensitive laboratory test (plasma concentration of methylmalonic acid). When vitamin B12 is used for therapeutic purposes other than correcting a deficiency, injections are usually needed to get results. Sublingual forms of vitamin B12 are available, but there is no evidence that they provide any benefit to oral supplements.
